On this page, you can download INCA version 1.53, released January 2011.
INCA is a user-friendly computer program that analyzes data from transect
counts: the number of insects along a fixed route on a number of days. In its
analysis, INCA uses the Zonneveld model, which contains four parameters: an
index of population size, the time of peak emergence, spread in emergence
times, and the death rate. INCA returns estimates for each of these parameters,
complete with standard deviations. In addition, it displays a chart containing
both your data and the model fit; this allows you to judge the model
description.
Features
-
a straightforward, 'wizard-like' approach. INCA takes you through the analysis
step by step.
-
extensive help that includes information on the model, statistical aspects of
the analysis, and the numerical routines used.
-
a collection of 30+ analyzed sample datasets. You can get acquainted with
INCA's capabilities by analyzing the samples yourself. In the help file, we
discuss the results of every sample set.
-
input via an Excel-like interface that allows for copy-paste from Excel.
-
output to printer or to an Excel file (for the latter, you must have Excel
installed). Output includes estimates, standard deviations, and a chart showing
data and fit.
-
support for batch runs. You can analyze multiple datasets simultaneously.
System requirements
INCA is a pc-based program. If you want to run INCA, your pc should have the
following installed:
-
Windows NT4/95/98/98 SE/ME/2000/XP/2003/Vista/7.
-
Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher1,2 (included with Windows 98 SE and higher).
-
The Office Web Components 9 or higher. These are included with Microsoft Office 2000, XP and
2003, but not with newer versions. They are also
available online3.
1 |
Certain versions of Internet Explorer 5.5 contain a bug that causes INCA to crash.
If this happens, install the latest critical updates available for Internet Explorer from
WindowsUpdate, or upgrade to Internet Explorer 6 or higher. |
2 |
Versions of Internet Explorer prior to 6 also require the
Microsoft XML Parser 3. |
3 |
If the Office Web Components (OWC) are not installed, INCA will use Excel instead.
However, this severly degrades performance. It is, therefore, recommended that you install
the OWC separately if not provided with your version of Office. |

As you run the installer, you may get a security warning
telling you the publisher of the software cannot be verified.
Simply click 'Yes' to continue installation of INCA.
The initial download is 375 KB. The installation program will download
about 11 MB of additional components during setup.
As setup will download components from our site, your pc should be connected
to the internet while you install INCA. If you want to install INCA on a pc
that does not have an internet connection, you can download a ZIP package with
all setup files here. To install, extract the
files from the package (using WinZip, for
instance). Then run Setup.msi.
Troubleshooting
-
INCA installation fails with the message "The installer was interrupted".
This occurs on Windows Vista and later. To resolve this problem, upgrade to the
latest version of INCA. [fixed in 1.53]
-
When exporting results to Excel for a dataset that has one or more points
disabled, an 'Internet Explorer Script Error' occurs.
To resolve this problem, upgrade to the latest version of INCA. [fixed in 1.52]
-
After choosing a data source in INCA 1.50 and clicking 'Next', an 'Internet
Explorer Script Error' occurs.
This occurs in combination with Office XP versions prior to Service Pack 3. To
resolve this problem, upgrade to the latest version of INCA. [fixed in 1.51]
-
After entering a new dataset or editing an existing one, INCA 1.50 does not
offer to save the dataset.
This occurs in combination with Office 2000. To resolve this problem, upgrade
to the latest version of INCA. [fixed in 1.51]
-
Help links (green underlined text) do not function.
This is caused by installation of certain critical updates for Internet
Explorer (February 2003 and later). To resolve this problem, upgrade to the
latest version of INCA, and ensure you have the latest
critical updates for Windows installed (specifically, the HTML Help
update, 811630). [fixed in 1.21]
-
After choosing a data source (new set, saved set, or sample set) and clicking
'Next', INCA crashes.
This occurs on systems running Office 2000 in combination with a specific
version of Internet Explorer (IE) 5.5. To resolve this problem, install the
latest critical updates for IE, or
upgrade to IE 6 or higher.
-
At startup, INCA exits with the error message 'The estimation module could not
be created'.
This occurs when INCA cannot find a required shared component. This may happen
on systems running Windows 95, 98 or NT 4. To resolve this problem, upgrade to
the latest version of INCA. [fixed in 1.20]
-
You cannot abandon the 'Edit data' and 'Settings' pages (by clicking 'Home' or
